Got a 55 for Christmas. Have been reading as much as I can on cichlids. I THOUGHT I was going to go with a firemouth and a convict, but now I think that I am going to go in a different direction. I want a few angels. Can I safely house 4 angels in a 55 gallon along with some larger tetras and a few kuhli loaches? Do I need to drop the number to 2 angels? Do I need caves for the angels? To me they don't look as though they would need / use a cave. Thanks!

dont put a fire mouth and a convict together what ever you do!unless your tank is about six foot long!not good buddys.imo the angel set up seems fine.poss probs when they mature if they pair off.

firemouths and cons would be fine together

you would do better with 2-3 angels, unless your starting out with small ones, then you can raise them, and maybe get a pair, but 4 adults wouldnt be good in a 55..

if you plan on starting with bigger angels..then 2 adults would be the right choice, they aren't small fish..

I would have no more than three angels. Even if they are rasied from babies together, when they mature and (if) pair off, they will still fight with each other if there territories are crossed.

In my tank, I ended up having to remove all my angels from my 75 but 5 after they paired because of aggression. That leaves 2 pairs and one oddball in my 75 g tank. Out of 8 angels-- 6 of them paired off, one angel had its top jaw ripped off fighting with another angel and had to be put down, and one thats own its own.. I had to remove the third pair and put in my 37 g. I do have larger tetras with my angels in both tanks. Occasionally aggression is shown toward the tetras if the angels have spawned and the tetras get to close. Other than that, IME, the angels are fine with other fish, just not with each other.

My tank is heavily planted with real driftwood..no caves..angels dont really need caves .
