Why sad? It is like looking at a LFS tank.

it's like watching animal cops when they go to a house that has 75 cats, all neglected and half-wild because the owner hoards them. doesn't care about the needs of the cats, just feels an impulse to have MORE
So neo...When are those 1000 gallon tanks for them going to be ready?

They probably do better in that tank than most
I'm guessing the ammonia is 0, the nitrite is 0, and the nitrate is <10 (and never raises or falls)
Any input on that Li? I'm willing to bet that their water is better than 99% of everyone elses...... Throw a log in there Li.
Good water quality...yes. Room to move without bumping in to each other...that is a different story.

i know what your saying, i just find it wierd that were talking about a fish that loves to wedge itself and 5-10 others into the gap between a PVC pipe and a piece of slate leaned against it. my 5 have the whole darn tank to swim around but even when feeding or just swimming around there alway next to each other.

They all look great to me, healthy and have nice colors. I agree with guZZ, that loaches don't seem to mind being "crowded". I recently moved a piece of driftwood in my tank and had about 20 loaches come out of it. I have no idea how they all fit in there. (Kind of like 20 clowns getting out of a VW.)

if "still the same after three months" is temporary.
I don't know.....everyone in that tank looked quite healthy and alert, the tank is VERY clean and no substrate so nitrate buildup probably isn't much of a concern if water changes are done regularly.
If it's an lfs tank than it's a temporary home until they are bought and moved out. I think I read that it's an lfs tank.... am I mistaken ?

It is Li's tank, but he doesnt do water changes. It has enough filtration for over 1000 gallons and has a 24 hour constant water change setup.
With that system the nitrates never raise and fall. They stay constantly low while keeping ALL other water parameters in check. It's really an awesome way to do it.
Wow....wouldn't I just like to have a system like that for ALL my tanks !!!
I am so green.... :D

. They may be healthy. How would any of us know that? Neo is using a loophole to keep all of these fish in this manner. However this still does not provide any of these fish with the adequate space or decor they should have. I realize he plans on putting them in much larger aquariums, but it would have been better to wait until those aquarium were finished before getting them.

Loophole? lol.... I hope you're not talking about the drip system......
IF that's not the case, what is the loophole that you speak of?
Loophole? lol.... I hope you're not talking about the drip system......IF that's not the case, what is the loophole that you speak of? I am referring to the drip system. I'm calling it a loophole because a normal 180 gallon aquarium would never be able to support the bio-load of that many fish, yet his fish have perfect water. I agree his method is the best possible, however the fish are still being denied an adequate amount of space.

I wouldn't call the drip system a loophole. It's pretty common to have one now. It's so easy that I have it set up on smaller tanks. A drip system should be standard equipment IMO. I'm only dripping 1gph on my 265 and the nitrates NEVER go above 15ppm. My bio load is much higher too (but his filtration is far better than mine).
If he put all of those loaches in a 1000 gallon tank I bet that they'll take up the SAME amount of space. I guess we'll wait and see about that though.
If he put all of those loaches in a 1000 gallon tank I bet that they'll take up the SAME amount of space. I guess we'll wait and see about that though. LOL. Of course they will take up the same amount of space. But the aquarium will be over 5 times larger so there should be more room. I suppose it depends on the design of it though. Either way I cannot wait to see it!
Those clowns don't actually look like they're looking for more space......they seem to all want to be in the SAME space all at one time....LOL ! I think if he had a tank that was 10 times bigger.....all those clowns would still be grouped together...all in the same little corner.......

So what's the problem? If they all hover together and act like clown loaches do I don't see what's wrong.
So what's the problem? If they all hover together and act like clown loaches do I don't see what's wrong. Is this true clown loach behavior, or is this a fear response? My clown loaches do not always play nice. ;)

If it was out of fear they would all be cowering at the back of the aquarium swimming back and forth trying to get away from NEO. All of those dats and other fish also probably act as dithers to the clowns so I don't think they're afraid at all.

Some people play by the "rules" and some don't. That's all it is. As long as the fish are healthy and his filtration is more than ample IMO it's ok. It's not like the fish have outgrown the footprint of the glass box and he's using a whisper hob to filter it..
That said, nice clowns!:)

then maybe you need to add some more to spread the aggression

Care to elaborate? Adding more clown loaches may "spread" the aggression out, but it will also increase the amount of aggressive behavior in the tank. Since the clown loaches never harm each other why would I want to stress them out by increasing the amount of aggressive behavior in their aquarium? neo has circumvented this aggression all together through his unique aquarium decor. It seems likely that neo's loaches are constantly shoaling together due to fear, but do not exhibit signs of stress because they find safety in their numbers. The same way they do at any LFS.
 I'm not sure that would work.
