I'm getting a 30 gal. tank and have the chance to get a Eheim ProII 2206 from a friend for cheap.

Is the 2206 too much overkill for a tank this size?

I know it's range is something like 50 - 90 GPH. And I certainly don't want it throwing my fish out of the tank, or spraying water everywhere.

Are you using this tank for a sw tank? Are you planning on using the filter with media, or just for water movement with no media? Is the return adjustable? I'm not familiar with the product, but you should be able to adjust the flow rate, and if you use a spray bar, it should be fine. A turnover of 2-3 times per hour isn't unreasonable, depending on what the occupants will be.
