Ok I have had my tank set up for a little over a month now.. When I first got my tank I added 1 red claw crab...about 2 weeks later the crab died...so I went back to the store and exchanged him for another crab....this was about Dec 17th today is Jan 12 and there are now 2 crabs in my tank... HOW is that??? The new crab is smaller than the original crab... I am wondering did it have a baby??? Why is it so big and I have only had the new crab for about 3 weeks, do they give birth to ive crabs...or do they lay eggs....HELP I am confused on how I now have 2 crab

20 e-bucks says that your first crab molted (shed its skin) and what you thought was the dead crab was actually the empty skin. it hid out after the molt because its outer shell was still soft and it was very sensitive. they molt as they grow so it would be bigger than before.

see above

After reading this post, I checked out red-claw crabs on the web. It looks like a really cool addition to any aquarium. What special requirments does a crab like that have in terms of compatibility, water conditions, surface contact, etc?

They like to get a little air and are escape artist. Mine like to get his air under the HOB filter cover. How he gets there I don't know. Must hitch a ride on a fish.

Are they safe with most tropical fish? I have a 29 gallon tank with Mixed Fruit Tetras, Neon Tetras, Headlight/Taillight Tetras, and Chinese or Siamese Algae Eaters.

no, they need BW for long term health, and will not live ver long in FW. also, they will eat any fish they can catch.

That makes absolute sense

I hope your right about that....but... I am seriously thinking about getting rid of my crabs.... I was lucky enough to catch one of mine in the route of escaping under my couch.. I can only imagine what would have happend if I did not see it in action... I would have though my crab was still in the tank because this happen before I figured out I had TWO!

I am scared now

I am scared of my crabs now.. I am constantly looking for the two of them in my tank ever since the bigger one got out the other day...The morning I saw him hanging on to one of my floating plants...NOW how in the heck did he get up there...is there something that I can put by the heater and filter holes that blocks the possible excape routes????
