See my signature. I currently have one Electric yellow LAB and a P. Senegalus I wish to introduce into my 36er once it's set up. I'll be keeping the rocks and substrate in blacks, whites, and greys. I want a bright yellow and deep blue (preferably stripey) motif for my cichlids and I'd like to keep to ones that don't get larger than 4 inches... 5 MAX!!

Any suggestions on plausible combinations? I've made a few suggestions randomly on other threads and often it seems my choices contradict one another. Carnivores with herbivores. Too agressive with too docile. Too big with too small. There's just so much variety and I'm overwhelmed, but I want to have a beautiful cichlid tank. I need help!!

By the time you hit 1 male/3-4 females of one species/color, your 36 will be to small.

You think so? Hmmm... I do intend to upgrade to a 125+ set up very soon, so perhaps ideas on tankmates for the 1 male and 3-4 females I'll buy for now for the 36?

The Electric Yellow is a good choice for a smaller tank growing only to 3-4 inches. I would start with a group of 4-5 of them and wait until you get your bigger tank before introducing another species.

I've seen yellow labs that were 5-6 inches TL. 36 gallons seems awfully small for a group of this species.

How long till u upgrade your tank.
If the 36 is only temporary (i mean very temporary) and has good filtration u could keep a quad of yellow labs and a quad of cobalt blue zebras.
and then put them in the 125 when u upgrade.

I agree, 36g is a bit small. I've only heard that Yellow labs get 5-6 inches...never heard 3-4. And while they are one of the less aggressive types of Mbuna, they are still African cichlids and a 36g tank is too small for aggressive fish that get 5-6 inches. If you can't get around a 55g, then I'd go ahead and get the 125g soon. :)
