Can I use a rio outside the tank safely?

I have a rio 3100 just sitting around. Can I use this pump to run a skimmer if I plumb outside the sump? I know they leak oil when they die, but where do they leak it? In the main housing or where? Will the oil still get into the tank water somehow if the motor itself is dry and hoses are hooked up to the intake and return ports?
