We upgraded to 130 watts of lighting (6700K lights) (up from 30 watts) about 2 weeks and needless to say, I can’t say that I’ve seen an improvement in our plant growth and I am puzzled. Prior to the lighting upgrade we were growing Anubias Nana and Java Fern with no problem. After the upgrade, I’ve added 2 Amazon Sword’s, Hornwort and some Hairgrass . The hornwort, in particular, look the worse of all the plants.

Our tank specs are:

60 gallon tank, standard gravel substrate and I does with Excel and Flourish per the bottle on a weekly/daily basis. Other chemical s I use are Prime and API Tap water conditioner. We started using the tap water conditioner back when we were attempting to keep snails alive but I am thinking that I don’t need to keep adding this anymore since the snails have moved on. I also do not use CO2.

So, my questions are whether or not I should be dosing with other fertilizers and whether or not I should turn off our airstones during the day and only run it at night, if at all?

Thanks,
Bill

ur at medium low light, ur only dosing traces and excel, and u have to be patient. with the plants u have the light is fine but ur missin ur NPK, these are also essential for plants growth. excel is a good replacement for CO2 but can get expensive, along with the other flourish line, a tank tht size i would use dry ferts.

I have noticed that a lot of people here are having problems with plants. Most all of these problems stem from a lack of knowledge about proper nutrients for the plants.

Most commonly people are saying that they are dosing Excel and Flourish. That's about 1/4 the picture. You need a source of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

Take a few minutes and read my Guide. I cover nutrients quite well in it.
