Sorry very long...
Hi, I'm new here.
Let me tell you how this all came to be. My DS9 wanted a fish tank. He is crazy about fish. We set out to get him a small 10g for his room for xmas. The Lady at the LPS talked us into going bigger next thing I know we have a 40g with cabinet in our family room. Not complaining though actually now I wish we had bigger but DH says I suffer from big is better syndrome.
Anyway she told us to fill the tank up and put fish in it the same night. I honestly thought that sounded odd and said don't we have to wait at least 24 hours. Oh no she said put them in once the water reaches 85 and stays there. My son picked out some black skirt and white skirt tetras. We did as told. I starting thinking plants would be nice so next day I went back but she told me to wait 10 days till there was enough fish poop for fertilizer. Well I started getting more and more interested so surfed around the web. Found out that what she said wasn't so good. I found out about the cycle. I went out bought some testers and started doing water changes keeping the levels down. Trying to make sure my DS's fish stayed safe. I was a little upset that she could do this knowing they may not survive the cycle. I also ran out and put in some plants to absorb some of the bad stuff! I didn't wait the 10 days she recommended. I also noticed that one of the tetras had white stuff on it. I read some and thought it was ich. I read to bring the temp up to 85 but mine was already there and add salt. 2 weeks later nothing. So I went back and in the same tank I saw another tetra that looked just like mine. I pulled the sales person over and said "My fish came out of this tank and looks like that what is it?" He said it was harmless fungus and not contagious. Not so sure I beleve him though since there was one just like him in the same tank!
He gave me some fungus clear tank buddies. So I've had that in for 2 days now. I hope he is right. He doesn't look better. I have not lowered my tank I've been afraid to.
Should I gradually lower my temp? I don't want to stess them anymore.
So this is how I came to this forum. I've learned some but have a long way to go. I'm just thankful I found you guys!!!
Anyway the moral of the story is if I could do it again I would research, research, research before starting a tank. On my defense I thought I could trust the Lady since she was the owner but I still wish I would have done things differently.
