a good average is 78°F ... and though you didn't ask, an 8 gallon tank is too small for all those fish.

This is probably normal but I keep my Water Heater at 71 and the thermometer reads 79.

I thought I had a bad thermometer at first so I ended up trashin my old one for a new one and got the same temp. Shouldn't the stupid heater not heat up anything if it reads the current temp is HIGHER that what it is set too.

Sounds very dumb to me, maybe I have a crappy heater or maybe this is normal. I oringally got my heater from PetStupid and asked the lady to get me the best heater they had.

my 10G and 20G are both at 80. i've been thinking about bumping my 20G down 2 degrees since 78 is a good enough temperature for them. but my bettas love that heat.
