Which website?

What is this "aquarium salt" one hears about? Does it come from aquariums, as sea salt comes from the sea? Is it any more than sodium chloride in fancy dress? Is "aquarium" on the package, or is "aquarium" in the salt?

Brine shrimp require a high alkalinity besides NaCl.

It's congratulations. Yes I've used aquarium salt (a very old box that I use for an abrasive cleaner, since I've learned it's not necessary to spend $ on it any more).... Anyhow, this is the site I've used for my hatching instructions: http://www.geocities.com/bryan_cass/shrimp.htm Caution it is a geocities site with pop-ups. It also says to use part epsom salt, which I did - can find that in pharmacy-type sections of stores.

wetmanNY - Maybe aquarium salt is much like baby oil. One doesn't like to think where it actually comes from.

Plain old aquarium salt works fine.

laughing out loud. I'm as easily amused as kveeti.

Sodium bicarbonate is another good addition to your plain salt.

BTW, use those baby brine shrimp in their first twenty-four hours. They lose nutritional value. I understand they don't start feeding til their third instar*.

Hi,
They feed endogenously for the first 24 hrs, like a fish larvae's oil sac. That is why they lose nutrition.
You can feed green water (microscopic unicellular algae), this known as microencapsulation, (exogenous feeding).
In this way the larvae are gaining the roughage from the artemia and essential proteins and carbohydrate's from the consumed alga.
This is the best way to have healthy fast growing fry.

Or, if culturing green brine is dodgy, you can use that bioencapsulation enrichment called Selcon.
