I was gravel vac'ing my 55 planted tank (with only a single female betta in it, along with some snails), and sucked up this LIVE worm like thing. It's about an inch long and pointy on one end. It's FLAT and smooth, unlike a bloodworm. It seems to "stick" to the bottom when I swish the water, but wiggles like a worm you may find on the sidewalk. I feed pellets and frozen bloodworms, and zucchini for the snails. What in the world IS this and where did it come from? I'm planning to keep it overnight in case someone thinks it's some sort of revolutionary worm (LOL) but plan to flush it tomorrow since I don't know it's origin or what it may do to my plants or fish. Thanks in advance!

could be a small free swimming leech.

It looks like a planaria to me. It's a flatworm, totally harmless to fish. You could even put it back in your tank, if it doesn't get eaten it would probably be a pretty good scavenger.

On second thought I don't think it is a planaria, but I know for a fact it is some type of flatworm. That's very general though, its like saying that a betta is a fish if you know what I mean.

your going to need to look closely at the head..

that is where you can see the difference.

I have seen some pretty small leeches

but it could very well be a tape worm.

The question i would want to know is how did it get in the tank anyway?

It is definetly not a tapeworm.
