Just wondering what people think of these, Im ordering one from bigals (probably tomorrow). Im setting up my 23 gallon again soon, and heres my plan. Right now my 20 high has an aquaclear 150 and an aquaclear 200. I've had an emperor 280 running on another tank for a few weeks to get the bio-wheel started, and Im going to put that and the aquaclear 200 from the 20 high onto the 23. Then Im going to put the penguin mini on the 20 high, and keep the aquaclear 150 on it too. Im not going to put any media in the bio-wheel filters and Im going to let them handle the biological filtration, and Im going to use the aquaclears as mechanical filters and rinse the media in them every day or every other day so, and maybe replace every week or so (just cheap filter floss). The emperor doesnt work like it should (Im pretty sure it doesnt), the water just trickles out, not even close to 280 gph but I dont really care because I only wanted it for the bio-wheel anyway. Its on a tank now that has a betta in it and the betta can swim behind the intake or anywhere else near it and it doesnt suck his fins toward it at all, but no big deal. Anyway I think this plan will work well. I guess there wasnt really much point to this thread except to see what people think of penguin minis, and to tell my plan.

I've used the Mini. The bio-wheel on it is worthless...too small. Mine got stuck all the time. Skip it and go for the 170. Whatever the price difference is (which can't be much), it's worth it.

i agree that the mini is pretty useless on a 20 gallon, even the penguin 125 a lot better. i wouldn't reccoment using no media at all in the penguins because the bio wheel will get real dirty and covered in scuzz deposits.

Maybe I'll go for a 125 instead, and put some filter floss in the intake tube so the bio-wheel doesnt get all cruddy, and replace it every day or so.

I did end up going with the 125, I just ordered it a few minutes ago. The 170 was only $7 more than the 125, but Im on a very limited budget so decided against it. Maybe I should have got it though.....
