Hello everyone.

I have two red-eye tetras that are sick. One has what looks like a patch of fungus on it's back, but it's the other one I'm really concerned about. He has a huge growth covering his left eye...I am going to post pictures, but trust me, it looks way worse in person. I'm tempted to take him out of the tank and peel it off, because it looks like it might be a growth of fungus or something. Has anyone seen anything like it? All my water parameters are normal...he's in a hospital tank right now being treated with Maracyn. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

i wouldn't try 'surgury' .. you might initiate a far worse problem than it has already. neither would i add drugs (medication) unless you can figure out why the fish is sick in the first place since doing so will have little positive effect.

such problems are often a water quality issue: have you checked your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate levels? ("normal" doesn't describe anything useful). are these recent additions (they may have come to you already sick). if so, did you quarantine them before putting them in your tank? anything else you can tell us about the history of this tank.

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrates: 10

Tank specifics are below in my signature. I do 50% water changes once a week. My nitrates never get above 15...and I don't think he was attacked. You can't tell too well in the picture but the top of the growth looks fuzzy...almost cottony.

The tank has been set up for about 15 months, and I added these tetras two months ago. I did not quarantine them, as I did not have the extra tank until recently. I had a neon pass away two days ago, and he looked like he might have had early ich (two white spots on his back). No one else in the tank (other than these two) have been affected, or have become sick. I've had the above fish in the hospital tank for 6 days.

your water quality is obviously good and your tank is not crowded. again, how long have you had these fish? perhaps they came to you sick? in this case, i suppose Maracyn couldn't hurt.

Did its eye just pop out quickly or has it been poping out over some time?

It did seem to happen all of a sudden. It's hard to tell if the eye is actually popped out, or if there is a growth over it.

I feel so bad for him! It looks so painful!

Edited after the above: I guess it did pop out...I have no idea how that could have happened! What should I do?

He's listing to the side now. I doubt he'll make it through the night.

This is the hardest part about this hobby. When fish get sick, it's a crap shoot as to how to help them.

He is still alive, but listing completely sideways! His eye looks worse today too. I tried to bring myself to euthanize him, but I just can't do it. He still ate today, though.

Any chance you think he'll make it through?
