If you want to make your own hood/fixture, the best place (IMO) is: http://www.ahsupply.com

They sell CF fixtures...and should have one that is appropriate for your tank. They're very easy to assemble.

As far as good for your plants...any bulb 5000K-6700K should be sufficient for a general purpose bulb.

I have bought from AH Supply and BigAl's. The advantage to AH is you can get whatever you want; the disadvantage is you have to put it together yourself. The advantage to BigAl's is you can buy light strips or complete hoods; the disadvantage is it's prohibitively expensive.

I recently installed my first compact fluorescent and have to say it is far and away superior to regular fluorescents.
