Well, since this post is in the marine section, the ugf is pretty much out. They just don't work with sand, and many, much better options are available. The canister all depends on what type of tank you are setting up.
A little info is needed for an adequate answer,
Will it be fish only, or reef?
Stocked heavily or lightly?
Are you planning to have Live Rock?
What kind of substrate? or bare bottom?
If you are setting up with around 1.5 lbs per gallon of live rock, most will recommend no canister at all. It just traps too much and turns into a NitrAte factory. IMO, use the money for a canister and spend it on a good skimmer.
