Is it really that easy?

I already have 1 betta tank with a balloon Molly in. Yesterday when looking in local pet shop shop I fell in love with a white betta which I want to bring home.

after reading info on betta's I would like to know if setting tank up is really that easy.

I have a spare 10liters tank with no filter but has a heater. It it really a case of fill the tank, warm the water and put betta in.

Technically yes, but make sure that you use a declor for the water that you put into the tank. Although bettas do alright in a tank with no filter they are much better off in a tank that has a filter. No filter means that you will be changing out the water for the betta every two or three days. With a filter you can do a partial water change once a week after the tank is cycled.

i think that depends on what your definition of "alright" is. a fish swimming in it's own toxic waste which is diluted every few days means the fish is "surviving". if you're going to keep fish, why not do so in a manner in which they "thrive". a filter will keep the toxic waste levels at ZERO rather than just 'low'. a heater will maintain a constant temperature.

the only analogy i can think of is thus: i keep you in a closet equipped with a bucket which you can pee and poop in. every few days i open the door and empty the bucket for you but i neither rinse it nor out nor clean it in any way. i simply put it back in your closet. this versus a closet that is equipped with a toilet which you can flush after each use.

the bucket method is what you've got if the tank has no filter. which would YOU be happiest in?

Have spoken to friend of mine and he is a spare filter which has been cycled which he will be taking out of his own tank in 1 week. He said I could have it.

So I will be adding a filter which is ready to use in 1 week.

Good. I am glad that the tank will have a filter. Your betta will be much happier and healthier this way. And, by the way to the poster that quoted me about the betta doing alright without a filter, you took it out of context. Read the rest. I said that the betta is better off in a tank with a filter and explained why. Technically a betta can be kept in a tank with no filter but of course that is not the best thing for the betta. Who wants to live like that?

I will add picture as I haven't seen another one like him!!!

(maybe differant in the states but in the UK we are very limited to blues and reds)

I love white bettas, but have yet to find one around here, Be sure to post pics!

And I do recommend getting a heater as well as the filter. I find that bettas like their water warm at 76-80 degrees. Most folks don't keep there house quite that toasty. Certainly the lighting on the tank will add some heat, but what happens when it's lights out? You want a stable temperature.
