Someone alleged that the blue speckles on the gill area of a dempsey mean that it is male. Is this true? Females have no blue speckles?
IME females and males have blue speckles near the gill area, but males have far MORE of them.

Female has green streaks on the lower gill plates. Male has few to none. The male, overall, has more green sparkles on the body. The gill plate marking is the easiest way to identify female when they are young.
You might want to try looking on Cichlidscene.com he has a pair and many pics of them they are good for a referance.
