How difficult are hatchets?

I've read that hatchets are difficult to keep that water conditions have to be perfect. I'm new to this whole thing my 40g just has some black skirt tetras in it. I'm just trying to make a list of wants and read up on them. Are they really that hard to keep?


Also how do you clean your tank without them jumping out? :confused:

I haven't found them hard to keep. But I added them to a well established community 90 gal tank, that has excellent water conditions.

I only lift the hood on one side at a time, and even then, one will take a jump every so often.:eek:
 
I have marbles and they seem very hardy. Never had any problems with them at all. I did have one jump out, oddly it was when the tank was closed. When I'm in there with the gravel vac they retreat to the lower regions of the tank.

I like them a lot, I only have three and they school tightly, and always face the same direction. With the marbled pattern and the little triangle shape you get a cool MC Escher effect. :)

Can I ask what happened did he open the hood? Or hit it and fall back in. Did he survive? :confused:

They sound reaaly neat. I have been reading that marbles are hardier. Maybe I'll get those. The silver ones looked neat so I was thinking of getting them but now I think I may try the marbled.
 
Hatchets are another fish that does very well being fed flightless fruit flies. Try to get some cultures going.
 
I have two marbled (use to have 3) and they swim low when I'm cleaning the tank. They haven't jumped out yet. I considet them to be easy to keep.
