Have a 55 gallon tank with a power whisper 60 filter, i know tetra says its enough but is it really good for a 55 gallon? Also what kind of hood lighting should i be using. Every 2 or 3 days, the water in the tank evaporates by about maybe 1/2 to an inch or so, is this of the lighting or is it normal, temp is about 78 in the tank. Also my ammonia is now at 0, NH 3 is 20 NH 2 is at 0 as well, these are all good i belive correct?

As ive read ive learned that you cant go by gallon ratings on filters, its all about how many gallons per hour it flows with media. I have an aquatech HOB filter which says its rated for up to a 40 gallons and im not sure how many GPH is flows but im sure its not enough and i also have a a Rena XP2 which flows 160 GPH with media. This is all on a 29 gallon, not sure if this helps you but i thought i'd put it out there. I dont think you can have too much filtration so it might not be a bad idea to upgrade especially if you plan on taking your stocking capacity to the max

keep in mind that even if the filter says it filters a 55 gallon tank it may not be sufficient for yours.it depends on the bio load.if you have a far amount of fish in your tank you may need more bio filtration. so a good thing is to have more filtration than you need. and 2 small filters is better than large one i have a 60 gallon with 2 ac 70s.and a 125 with 3 ac 110s.all with bio media.every thing else sounds good good luck...........

i just added a power whisper 30 to go with my whisper 60, that should do it, the fish i have are mostly small guys, i have 19 so far.

thats good like i said 2 better than one .i personally don't use my acs filters for mechanical only bio.i have a power head for my mechanical filter.i made a home made filter for may power head.that and water change is all i need to keep all my tanks Crystal clear.you should be fine with what you have enjoy your tank.....

what you might consider is tieing off some fine aquarium gravel into a cheese cloth or a ladys nylon hose, and stickign it, instead of the filter on your smaller pump overhang thingy. Make this pump strictly for biological filtration witch is gonna be most important in a somewhat heavily stocked aquarium.
