I bought a new 5 gallon container for doing water changes and I was wondering if whatever chemical that makes that "new plastic smell" would harm my fish. I've rinsed it out and stored water in it (with some prime) over night and dumped it out but it still has a little odor left.

I never had an issue with that, but that has been long ago. It is all python changes for me.

maybe if you got some of the prime on the side. i never had a problem. prime does stink though but its worth it.

yes there is leaching of the new plastic. This is the same thing that causes haze on car windsheilds.
That being said... for a water change, the water isn't exposed to the plastic long enough to be an issue. The bucket would have to become the permanent aquarium before you'd notice any ill effects.

I just use a 5 gallon Poland spring bottle. No Spills and easy to pour.
