lights on in the tank, how long?

I turn my tanks on when I get up 6:30 in the morning and shut the tank off about 10:00 at night, is this to long? maybe thats why the brown algae? how long should tank lights be on?
the light i am using it the one that came with my tank.
 
i leave mine on for 12 hours, from 10am to 10pm primarily for my plants. but im having a bit of algae carpeting the substrate so im going to cut back to 10 hours. if you don't have plants, then lighting should be restricted at or below 10 hours if you get algae.
 
my lights stay on about 12 hours a say, and ive yet to see green algae. Just brown and i thought that was from low light :huh:
