Power Heads..... in or out of water?

I have 3 Penguin 1140 power heads on my UGF and I would like to raise the plumbing to elevate the power head out of the water. This will do two thinks for me, first it will remove a pretty good heat load from the water and second it will look a lot better.

Will removing the pump from the water affect the life of the pump?
 
shouldnt affect it too horribly much as long as youve still got water running through it while its plugged in.
 
if you read the instructions, they state that the impeller housing and the diffuser must be completely submerged for the powerhead to work properly, so it has to be at least halfway underwater.
