View Full Version : Overdosing fertilizers?

Every week, just after a 15-20% water change, I dump half a cap of each of the fertilizers from the Seachem line (6 in total) into my tank. This is definitely over the recommended dosage for my tank (a 5.5G), but measuring exactly is difficult because it is such a small tank. Can overdosing nutrients create a problem? I don't think I'm going way over, and I doubt there is an imbalance since I'm using every recommended fert, but I was wondering about people's experience with using doses that exceed the recommended amount.

as long as you do weekly water changes you reset the tank, so you should be ok...although when you say dump a bunch of ferts...it would help to know what you are dosing...specifically.

It's hard to tell exact amounts, but about 2ml of Flourish, Excel (going to try DIY CO2 soon), Iron, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium.

you should be ok with regular water changes...
It is the same principal as EI <estimative Index dosing>
Make sure you have enough, then do a weekly water change to reset the tank.

It is possible to overdose, and you will know if you are overdosing if algae shows up. As long as the plants are growing well and no algae is present, don't worry.
