I set a small betta tank on Friday. I was given a filter that has been cycled and was only being used to establish a new filter.

Today I have found out the tank has been hit with a fungus infection while the filter was still in tank which has killed several of his fish.

Have I just put the fungus infection into my tank by adding the filter?

What kind of fish do you have in their? I would keep an extremely close eye on them. I am not shore of the cycle of fungus but I would suspect that its possible that you could have some in your tank.

The bigger concern would be how long was the filter out of water? If it came out of the infected tank and was dried out for a few days, you might be fine. I can't imagine aquatic fungi live too long out of water, without a host or media of some sort. If it was pulled out of one tank and put onto the next without being cleaned or anything, you might have a problem.

shoot most fungus cant be in an enviroment that doenst have at least 40% humidity in the air, and everything they grow on is damp. If water fungus gets anywhere close to dry id say it would die.

When i got the filter it was keep wet with water from the tank. I gave the filter sponge a really good clean as it had sludge all over it. It was only out of old tank into new tank in about 1 hour.

I must say the betta thats in the tank seems very happy and has just starting to build a bubble nest.

Thanks for you help I will keep as close eye on things.
