Couple Q's on these fishies...

Bought two more today to give the two I already have some buddies. Acclimated them to the tank, then went out for a couple hours. Came back and one of the newbies is missing! Searched around the tank to check for a Kamikazi carpet surfer; no sign. Thought Maybe my JD ate him, but he was put off eating the other two by the cats dorsal spines-still possible?

Also, will they eat small Brig snails? Put a bunch of pea sized snails I put in the tank with them and the JD's, all are gone now. The adult sized Brigs are still around, not being bothered.

Might be that the missing Pictus and the baby snails went to the fishie Burmuda Triangle....

How large are the Jack Dempsey's? Even if they are very large I would not expect them to try eat a pictus. And if they did I wouldn't expect them to succeed. The spines simply make the process too uncomfortable - as in life threatening. Even with their speed and agility I would expect the giant danios to be more likely prey. Do the danios get chased or hide a lot? I would recheck the area around the aquarium and also the filter. I have had clown loaches repeatedly climb the water stream into the box of my "hang on the back" filter. Do you have a dog or cat?

definately check between the glass and the hob if you have one the aclimation process is hard on them IMO. Also I dont think the jd would eat him if anything it would just kill it. It may have jumped out of the tank as well did you check behind/around the tank.

Checked in the filters last night ( I'm running 2X Penquin 350's on this tank-would have been hard to get past the Bio-Wheels I would have thought!) but no fishies. Also checked behind the tank; got it fairly well closed off-tired of the Brigs crawling out back there! No go...

Would have thought the spines would have dissuaded the big JD (he's about 8" long) from eating the Pictus; he explored the possibility with the first ones I got, was soon put off that idea !

No dog or cats, besides fishies just a gerbil for pets.

Danios are no problem with the JD's, they school together, JD's sort of ignore them. Only losses with them came from them carpet surfin' before I upgraded the tank covers to glass tops from Perfecto.

To be quite honest I have had a couple of fish mysteriously go to the bermuda triangle. As long as your dempsey seems to be acting normal and your tanks parameters dont change I would just chalk it up as a mystery, sit back and enjoy the others.

are you going to get a bigger tank? pictus get to about 10".

Actually did some research before I got the first ones (), their are two types, Peruvian and Columbian. Peruvian (which I have-bigger spots) get to about 5 " max, Columbians (pin point spots) do get about 10".

Anyway, lost the second one I bought on Monday. Where it went, who knows! No body floating at the top of the tank, not in filters, not behind tank or on carpet, Jack and Bob the JD's aren't belching from a good meal.

I should have known you would have done research. I feel a bit sheepish...

I am interested in the two varieties, as I have always thought Pictus cats would be great if they just topped out at 6 inches. However, I didn't see anything on planet catfish that defined the size differences other then a mention that the columbian variety grows larger.
