How cool is my boss... He just told me today that he is moving and doesn't want his 120g anymore. He told me if I come and take it down its mine for free! Complete set up. Only prob is that it comes with fish. Two 10-12" Pacu to be exact. I think I'll donate them to the Pittsburgh Zoo. I was so excited when he was telling me all of this!

Lucky.
I don't blame you for not wanting the Pacus, but did you tell him that? He may want someone that will keep them.

Oh that is cool! Too bad about the pacu though.... Call me cold hearted, but in your situation (no public aquariums around here) those pacu would be murdered and used as bait in a relaxing day of pier fishing.

Yes I told him... I also told him he should have never bought them! Our Zoo has a huge Oscar and Pacu tank. I think they would have the best chance there.

Might also want to try posting them in the Classifieds. Maybe... maybe someone will want them.Go with the offer and take the fish -- you can probably get a few bucks off of them selling them in the Classifieds.

Glad you told him so there is no misunderstanding, since it is your boss. Hope you find a good home for them. Any thoughts on what you will do with the tank once they get evicted? If it were me, it would be a Discus tank. :dance2:

stop using any chemicals on the tank, age the water for changes instead of using a dechlor, start feeding lots of fresh fruits and veggies. should be nice and healthy and fat soon.

pacu's are caught in their native environment for food. because they eat a lot of vegetation and fruits, their meat is especially sweet.
might i suggest sautee with a dash of lemon and pepper?

I was fishing once with a friend here in Florida , and he caught a huge Pacu, lol. Surprised the hell out of us...so obviously some people just let thier's go in a lake or a river somewhere. It's against the law, but hey no one has to know and what they don't know won't hurt them ;)

Hey, it happens....especially here in florida where the water stays warm enough for tropical fish to stay alive. There is a river near my house infested with Plecos( and you should see how big they can get in the wild they look like sharks)...and like I said we caught a Pacu that day. I also saw a picture of a guy who caught a Clown Knife in a lake around here that looked about 4 feet long, lol.
Disclaimer: I was only joking, not suggesting he really do that. But the fact is here in Florida it's pretty common to see aquarium fish in our waters from morons who set them free.

These fish grow to a massive size. The tank that is housing them now is not even 1/4 of the size they will need full grown. Not just any home will do..

No.
Exactly. NEVER turn your aquatics pets loose into the wild. This is a huge nono, and a thought that should not even be thought about. As resposible fishkeepers, we want to protect the ecosystem, not aid in its demise.
Getting back on topic, Congrats on the free tank!.. As far as what to o with the fish, as others have suggested, post on the classifieds on MFK. If you cant find an appropriate home for these fish..You may want to think of euthanasia. (<--- simple fact of the matter is, that tank isnt large enough, and euthanasia would be the the most humane thing to do, and the safest) Read this, Has to euthanize Pacu's over the weekend. I think that was ridiculous to euthanize a perfectly healthy fish by dropping a cinder block on it's head simply because it was starting to outgrow the tank....had to be a better option than that...even slight stunting would be better IMO.
Here's hoping you don't follow his example...

better for who?
short, quick death for a healthy fish or long drawn out illness, getting worse and worse monthly? or even worse than that, slowly dying on the living floor in a wet puddle of carpet because *someone* (here's a hint - he has gills) got scared by a flashing light and busted the tank. . .

Short quick death beacuse YOU deem it necessary??....something tells me if a fish could talk he'd so , " no thanks , I think I'll just stay here a while, I'll pass on the ole' cinder block" Hence the reason he struggled when you netted him.
Meanwhile you can put the fish on Aquabid.com for free to a good home and someone will take it eventually, every time.

It'd be one thing if they had the poor things in a 30 or 55 gallon tank...but 120?? Granted it's still undersized, but not to the point to qualify as cruelty. Come on, the fish are still happy and healthy, there was no reason to kill those fish at that point... other than the fact you are tired of staring at a boring tank with just 2 fish and you want a community tank.
Just my opinion.

oh, so you'll take them then? they'll be fine enough in your 75, for now. really, if you DON'T take them, you're the cruel one. do something about the problem.
they only get 3 feet long, and weigh up to 60 pounds. that won't be hard, will it?

Nope not my problem at all because they aren't my fish. Just stating my opinion that i thought what that guy did was kind of ridiculous.
But you might want to take a blunt object and bash your Sailfin Pleco's brains in...many people would say he needs a much bigger tank. :joke:

I'm too jealous to talk about the free tank! lol
And eww on eating aquarium fish. *gag* I'd try MFK first. Honestly if you have to...go with the cinder block idea. It's awful but... it's better than letting them go and having them destroy the ecosystem, or having that free tank shattered.

Congratulations on the tank :)
If I had that size of a tank, I would like to make a community of small fishes (schools of neons, emperors, diamonds, black phantoms, flames (von rio), cories, etc.).

i know that you can preserve dragonflies and large insects in glycerin, maybe it would be a good idea for the fish:
Use a mixture of one part glycerol to two parts water. Place the mixture in a flat pan, and totally submerge the leaves (fish) in a single layer in the liquid. You'll have to weigh them down to keep them submerged. In two to six days, they should have absorbed the liquid and be soft and pliable. Remove them from the pan and wipe off all the liquid with a soft cloth. Done correctly, the leaves (fish) will remain soft and pliable indefinitely.
you could use them as bookends or something.

What kind of fish are you going to replace the little devils with?
slowlyburn

Well I have replaced all of the fish now... I sold the 3 Bala Sharks and the 3 Albino Tinfoil Barbs for 25 bucks to my lfs. The same store who took the Pacu. I now have a Longnosed Gar and a Ornatipinnis Polypterus(Ornate Bichir) and a chinese Hifin Banded Shark. <---This chinese fish will be going back because I was very miss-informed about it. I'm now reading that its a cold water fish. My tank is at 75. The tank did finally cycled and all my daily water changes are finally over! Ill post pics of my fish soon!
