I have cycled my new 38G tank and ready to move my Tiger Barbs out of the 7G tank. My question is how long will the 7G tank stay cycled without any fish in the tank? My plan is to buy some guppies and put in the 7G tank. But, will be unable to do so for about 2 weeks. Also, do you think that 6 guppies is to many for my 7G tank?

New to this forum, so Thanks! up front

get some pure ammonia and just keep adding it in for the 2 weeks. i would go with 5 guppies.

Should be fine for guppies... or any other live barer besides sword tails. Your bacteria will begin to die after about 72 hours of not having any food for them. but they wont exaust all the food from a fuly stocked tank for at least two weeks. If they died faster than that, then we would never be able to do a fishless cycle. The amonia hungry bacteria are the first to bloom and spawn, and have to wait till all the other kinds of bacteria build up in the tank once they have chomped down on all there is to offer amonia wize in the tank. If they can go the three weeks or so with no food. then you should be fine.

one thing though, if youre letting the tank sit for 2 weeks before re-stocking it, test the water in it the day you get the guppies (before you go purchase them) and do a significant water change (50% or so) in case the bacteria did mostly die and you have excessive ammonia in the water.

Last time I looked for pure ammonia I could not find it. Therefore, I had to do a fishie cycle on my 38G. I seeded it with my filter and some of my gravel from the 7G. Had a real small mini cycle. I think I spent more $ looking for pure ammonia then what it would cost to buy. Asked a local pet store and they just looked at me! Where would someone buy pure ammonia? Looked at over 8 food stores and Wal-Mart. I guess I will just buy the guppies and move the barbs on the same day. Thanks for the info!

throw some food into the 7g, the BB will eat off of the food when it rots.
