I have about 500 baby texas cichlids and they just started swimming around. I was thinking again moving them to a 10G tank. Would that be the best thing or should I just leave them along in the 55G tank with the mom? I'm trying to do the best I can to hopefully keep a few!!!

Cichlids are preaty smart fish... meaning they know who thier children are. The MOTHER shouldnt bother them at all. If she has tank mates, i wouldnt risk it. Get them in a cycled spawning tank asap.

Is it just the mother? If so, the "kids" can be left in with her. If there are tank mates besides the mom, move them to the 10 gallon tank (cycled). If it is not cycled, let them stay in the big tank and see if a few survive.

I have the tank divided becuase I was thinking that the male could eat the babys.....so I split the tank with a divider the daddy on one side and the mother and her babys on the other. If I end up losing a bunch of the fry then I'll move the remaining into the 10G cycled. The 10G has been running for about 1 year so it good.

hey, instead of setting up the 10 fresh, why don;t you just siphon 10 gallons out of the 55 into it, that way you KNOW that the water is good, and after you get the fry transferred to it, you can chalk it up as a nice water change for the 55!
