Washing old Eco Complete, safe?

I've got some eco complete sitting in my closet in an old 20g that never had fish in it. It had a few plants (3?) for a while. My question is whether it is safe just to wash the dust off and add it to my existing 29g, which has mostly black gravel mixed with a little eco complete. Are there any special tips here?
