View Full Version : Ph rising as I am treating for ich; should I lower Ph chemically?

I have another question re. the ich treatment.

(If you need to see where we are, ref. my earlier post here: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94827)

My numbers are all good...I think. Water temp is a steady 82. I have added 1 3/4 tsp of salt per gallon of water in tank (heading to 2 tsp...hesitantly.) The remaining fish are looking well.

My Ph has risen from the usual 7.0 to about 7.4. I can typically keep it between 6.8 and 7.2. Ammonia and nitrites are zero. Nitrate is 10. If I do a water change today, it will increase a bit. I usually do a 20-30 % water change every Saturday.

My (long-winded) question is...shall I give some "Ph down," or just re-ck. tomorrow? Is the Ph climbing because there's less O2, and therefore less CO2, in the water? (I have lowered the water level to create more splash, and I do have an air hose.)

TIA!

I'm not sure what to tell you about that. Be careful. I would be afraid to start dumping much ph down, because if you end up having to treat the ich with chemicals, they will be more likely to do harm to your fish at a lower ph.

dont add ph down. higher heat doesnt let as much co2 or o2 into the water. just keep treating.

That change in pH without a change in TDS (dissolved solids) won't amount to much for the fish. Keep up the water changes and gravel vacuuming to help reduce stress and hopefully speed up getting rid of the ich.

Thanks for taking time to respond!
