I am started cycling my 90 gallon reef on Sunday :) My skimmer is an ASM-G2 skimmer and man it works good. I have all brand new clean water and its still skimming stuff out lol. But the question is should I not be skimming the water when I am cycling the tank? does it just prolong the cycling seeing I want stuff in my water to decay?

I am doing a fishless cycle just for info... Shrimp in a mesh bag in the refugium and live sand and rock in the tank.

I think this is one of them points where a debate starts and never actually finishes...I, personally, as a lot of other people, left mine off while i was cycling my tank, did not really see any point in having it running....However, i know there are the others who have it running right from the start..

It always seems to be a 50 - 50 battle to be honest...

I think the point that swings it in favour of having it on from the start is what state the live rock is in..If there is lots of die off on there, then yes, running it will remove loads of crap and gunk out of the system..But, if your live rock is in good shape, then does not seem worth it..

Just my opinion, am sure there will be others that chime in. Then its up to you really if you decided to keep it going..

Hope this helps a little

I personally do not turn on the skimmer until after the first month and it's cycled. However, if you're curing your live rock in your tank then I would say definitely keep the skimmer on.
