i beleive you mean LAKE Tanganyika cichlids. they're not brackish fish.

The gravity depends on what kinds of fish you want, but is not overly critical, because in natural brackish environments to salinity is constantly changing.

What kinds of fish do you want to keep?

Most LFS keep brackish fish in freshwater, so you are probably going to have to start your tank as fresh, then slowly raise the salinity by .001 every week until you get the SG you need.

EDIT: I missed it the first time. Lake Tanganyika cichlids are not brackish. They are a freshwater fish that needs hard water.

where'd ya read that?

im guessing that it'll make fish appear more active and colorful, but over the long term, it doesnt seem like a good idea.

I have seen them in brackish and from what i have read their colors are more vibrant in it.

In the wild they are not found in brackishwater, I would rather put a fish in a close to its natural environment as possible.

I have never heard of their colors being more vibrant in BW, do you have a link?

maybe someone is confusing reef lake additives with brackish water/marine salt additives.

Do you mean Paratilapia sp. (P. polleni/P. bleekeri)? Anything I have read indicates that these fish are generally found in mountainous rivers on Madagascar, not in brackish water.
