noisy AquaClear

Hi guys!

I have a 75g freshwater tank, mostly small tetras and some plants. My tank is fine, but my problem is with my AquaClear 500. It is making a humming noise. I just replaced it a week ago because the last one had started to do the same thing. I had the last one for 5 years and it was very quiet until recently. I used to clean it periodically, taking out the spinning wheel thingy (technical term:rolleyes: ) like I was advised at the store when I bought it and it worked like a charm for ages. Did I just buy a dud?

what do you use as a substrate..sand or gravel? if it's sand or a small type substrate sometimes it gets sucked into the filter and the impeller starts to make noise..
