Bulk veggies at the veggie store

Does anyone go to a place where they package large amounts of veggies into a bag and force you to buy the whole bag?

I wanted a small zucchini for my pleco and this place had only bags full of zucchini.

Same with the broccoli. I wanted only one head but the minimum was two!

They wouldn't let me buy these items by the pound so they lost the sale from me. Seems a little unethical. What do you think?
 
Most grocery stores are like that...I really would like a wide variety of veggies/greens for my reptiles, but they only sell them in the "normal" sized bags. I just tend to buy the normal size and eat the majority of it myself...LOL...works okay as long as you like veggies ;)

The LFS I frequented in MI, sold veggies/greens that they fresh cut and packaged into cups about half the size of a tub of butter..man I miss that place....

Have you tried a local organic store or fruit stand??? They sometimes sell by the pound...
 
i've never seen it like that. maybe carrots and celery they sell in a bag, and grapes always are like that, but the grocery stores that i have been to never sell the other veggies in prepackaged bags. always individually, so i can buy one zuke or ten. that really doesn't make sense because any single person doesn't want bulk. i don't think it's unethical, i just think it's a stupid business plan.

Must be a canadian thing, Are your veggies "home grown" or imported?
 
Im pretty sure the veggies they get are grown in Ontario and shipped west. I can get everything loose here. Grab a bag of zucchini and steam the bunch. Freeze the slices flat on a cookie sheet then transfer to a freezer safe container. You will always have some available that way. Some other pleco options to consider is sweet potato or squash (any variety). These items are usually sold "loose" and they are very inexpensive.
