did you buy them all at the same shop

you dont needto do anything for them to breed apart from good water quality

when i kept convicts they were breeding at 1 inch soon they will out grow that take unless you get ride of a few

sexing from memory the males have longer dorsel fins and the females have a shiny coloured belly but once they start breeding krikey they will fight like hell

You are going to want to cut back on how many are in your tank. 36 in a 55 violates almost any known rule of fish/gallon, and a lot of egg-eating, fry-eating, and fighting will take place as a result. (Not to mention how quickly water quality will destroy a brood.)

I have just two (mating pair) in a 33 gallon and they won't tolerate any tankmates except for the two zebra danios which have managed to avoid them so far.

Yeah you need to get rid of alot of them. The most you should have is like ten just to let a pair form then the rest got to go.

when they grow up all you will be able to have successfully would be like a pair and a few extras. if the extras arnd killed first.

I know thats a little extreme 36 fish with only the possibilty to keep one pair. Man hey maybe he just wants to make sure that when they pair up they had a variety of choices.
