I'm trying to cycle some (20lbs or so) dead rock in a 15gallon tank. I put it in about two weeks ago, put on a powerhead, skimmer, heater, gac in a whisper and water from my display tank. I also introduced some squid to get things going and a chunk of filter material I had in the sump that I figure was already seeded.

Ammonia cycle is over, but the nitrites are through the roof and not coming down.

Q:Do I do a water change anytime throughout the cycle or is the whole idea to make the LR a usable filter without water changes? How long does this typically take?

i would not do a water change untill the cycle has finished.... I.E no ammonia or nitrITES....Water changes wont really have any effect of whether the live rock is used as a filter or not..The live rock naturally filters anyways....The cycle itself can take anywhere up to 6 weeks...it all really depends..

Being as though your ammonia has spiked, i would take out the squid, it has done its purpose by raising ammonia to its spike and causing nitrITE bacteria to be created..The nitrATE bacteria will now works it magic and will eventually bring the nitrITE back down to zero...When you nitrATE has come back down to zero, then you can concider it cycled...

Your on the right tracks with all so far...Just give it time, and all will be good..

Good to know I can just let it cycle. I'll take the squid out today and just keep emptying the skimmer.
Thanks again for the good info, Niko,
Cheers,
Tom

p.s.Just took a look at your progress on the setup. Outstanding craftsmanship. Very impressed and am looking forward to seeing more pics.
