" The females of the Livebearing families of Toothcarps (which includes the Guppies, Mollies, Swordtails, and Platys), Four-eyed Fishes, and Halfbeaks, through a process called "superfetation", have an amazing ability to store unused sperm from the male fish in her body for several months. The female is then able to have young several times after just one mating! A female Mosquito Fish was noted to give birth 11 times from just one pairing! Only the Mexican Topminnow livebearer does not have this capacity!"

:thud: OMG, When you said that I went and looked at my fish and my Swordtail has a pink stomach with black dots in it :-0! How is this possible, she is the only swordtail in there and I have had her for almost 3 months.

Let the fry be if you don't want to worry about taking care of fry. Survival of the fittest :p:

Then I'd feel bad. So for sure if their belly is pink and have black dots in it that means they are pregnant?

Once pregnant, swordtails, just like most live bearing fish, will release babies about 1nce a month for about 6 months. Because they can store fertilized eggs for many months at a time, so even with no male in the tank, after they released babies once, expect more each month.

If you don't want your fry to get eaten, then get a "fry box" from Petsmart or Petco...Its just a little box with fine mesh surrounding it, so that your fish can live in the same aquarium, but without harm from bigger fish. And you can feed the babies newly hatched brine shrimp or finely crushed flake food.

you dont need a new tank just go to the store and buy a breeding trap/box..It floats right inside your other tank. it will hold the pregnant fish and allow the fry to drop down so that she can not eat them. then u can put her back with all the other fish and leave the fry to mature right in the breeding box.

I bought a female sward at a "mom and pop" pet shop the other day because she looked pregnant and the guy said she was. my guppies just had babies, well one did one is Prego and are in a 55 gallon tank, its not really set up fancy or any thing I just wanted to get them in there so the guppy babe's would be less likely to get eaten. Anyway I have been reading about sward breading and the one said they will have pink bellies with black dots. Well this young lady has a Black belly like my guppies did before they had their babies. She is a white/grey sward and the back half her belly is just black, any way she is not really fat or any thing but compared to my red swards (different tank) she is thicker and bigger in general. (Older maybe) also the pet shop guy said if she is pregnant they are molly/sward babies.
Does any one know if that is even possible? Could I have shocked her by buying her?
I took the no longer pregnant guppy and put her in the breeding net to keep her from eating the babies, right now neither of the other two seem to have problems with the babies.

Also on the pregnant guppy, she started laboring almost a week ago; she has been super bottom dwelling and seams to try to push the babies out with some of the large rocks. I am really worried about her she was doing this days before the other one gave birth and the other never did any of this. Also she has developed what looks like a bleed between her belly and spine just on one side. It’s internal and is just bubbled a bit,
Thanks for any help on an of my fish.

Rather than bringing a year old thread back to life, start your own thread.
