I started stocking my aquarium with platies in October. I had six in a 20 gallon tank, along with two Amano shrimp. Well, they all came down with ich and died little by little. But there were some babies in there and they survived the salt and heat treatment. The last platy died (or disappeared) last night after seeming to have stringy poop which I took to be an internal parasite, and also not eating.
Here are my questions, if someone would be so kind as to answer any one or all of them:
1) Will the intestinal parasite infect the shrimp? They seem to be in a great mood with not a care in the world and I've been trying to fight the parasite with garlic for two months now. They don't seem to have caught anything.
2) I'm going to wait a month before I add more fish. Will time alone get rid of the parasites? I change the water weekly (50%). I keep my aquarium very clean.
3) And the most mysterious question: What might be some globs of jelly-looking stuff I have found on the gravel? Looks like miniature jellyfish but whitish and fluid.
My ammonia is 0, nitrites 0, nitrates between 5-10, and ph 7.9.
As always, I thank you in advance for your help. I'm not going to give up, but this has been a bit more difficult than I expected.
Best regards,
Emil
