For the past few days my finger leather has been in this "sleep mode" even during the day. Normal it blooms up very nicely when in full light during the day. Today I have noticed some strands and chunks of a white/clear slime-like material peeling off from all over it. Has anyone ever experienced this?

Yes, I have it happen with finger and hand corals. I think it's not much more than a "rest" period.

Sounds like it's molting. I've seen it before. They usually look even better once the cycle is complete!

yeah, m007 is right. leathers do shed an outside "skin" every few weeks.

What are your water parameters....what is your nitrate level?

This seems like the likely culprit. I've had this coral in the tank for about 3 weeks and this is the first time I've seen it do this. My first impression was that it had died and was beginning to break down. A few hours after I created this thread it bloomed out normally...
