I'm sure you are all familiar with the typical Petco/Petsmart tank for the firebelly toads; gravel, water, toads, and not much else.
Suppose that you tried this:
sloped gravel with mondo grass and a filter like this>http://www.petco.com/Shop/petco_Product_R_8088_PC_productlist_Nav_222_N_24+1 12_cp_3_Nao_24_sku_933740_familyID_12460.aspx#deta ils
throw in some slate, or driftwood, and you'd have a pretty nice tank!
what do you think?

Nope, gonna be a pain in the *** to clean with a gravel bed that deep.

I kinda like the half coco fiber half gravel look ..but it sounds like an easy tank..I don't think FBT would mind it..but I did read that small gravel if swallowed can cause impaction..so maybe larger size gravel

I would second not building a deep gravel land area. I used to do it for small hatchling turtles, it just gets way too messy and is impossible to clean, especially if you want to plant it. I would either put in a platform witha ramp to hold gravel, or do what TipStylez did and build some sort of shelf.

I agree with you on the need for simplicity when dealing with hatchling turtles, they are messy! I far prefer a non-substrate bottom on all my turtle tanks. I silicone a few rocks down for places to rest, but other than that, nothing on the bottom.
I'm a fan of stacked rocks for a land area. The shelf idea that TipStylez did could be adapted to hold bromelids if you wanted plant life. If you got one of the small pond plant baskets you could just stack your rocks around that, making an "island". The plants are in the basket along with their substrate, and easy to remove for cleaning, if needed. Here's a picture of what I was talking about: http://www.pondbiz.com/home/pb1/page_446_8/plant_baskets.html I'm not sure why I can't find them, but I know some of these sizes come with lids that have holes that they plants grow out of...
