My GH is 8 and I would like to lower it. How do I do this? My kh is 4, ph is 7.

It seems to me like you have real good water. <looks around confusedly as usual> I think the only real way to lower gH (if ya really wanna) is to mix your tap water with RO. With your Kh being so low too that might tend to make your pH unstable though.

I have mostly tetras in my tank and I thought that they like to be in softer water, thats really the only reason.

Peat, like humic substances in general, adsorbs Ca and Mg cations and exchanges them for H+ ions. Softening and acidifying go hand-in-hand. As long as there is some buffering left, that H+ ion won't actually depress the pH, is my understanding.

Display tank or breeding?

For display, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

do a water change. you should be on soft nyc water living in yonkers unless you have a well. I have the same and have measured the tap as low as 6.0
