My new figure 8 puffer who is in fresh water right now is showing a few spots on his tail fin, one on his left side fin and one on his body I think it may be the start of ick :(
At first I thought they were the normal spots puffers get like little grow out spots, but I think these are infact raised it's soo hard to tell.
Can I add the Marine Salt (Instant Ocean) I already have?
Just been out and got him a bubble wall and started raising temparature...
Ugh I hope I don't loose him he's super cute, and playing in the bubbles :(

Oh Water parameters
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate approx 6.0
PH 7.8 (in this tank yet 7.6 in 55 dont' know why)

OK now it says
"The only thing I would caution against would be marine salt mixes for saltwater tanks, as they contain many things unnecessary for the treatment of ich and stand a good chance of changing water chemistry. "

Now I would have been adding this anyway to make him Brackish so therefore it does not apply to my particular fish or is it because it doesn't contain the NaCi?

I have already added 4 tablespoons of IO before I thought to ask the question can I start adding aquarium salt if the Marine Salt is definately the wrong stuff?

Instant Ocean isnt the same kind of stuff and wont do anything
actually, instant ocean is jusst another brand of sea salt and will work just fine.

I would have been adding this anyway to make him Brackish so therefore it does not apply to my particular fish
correct. you can certainly use marine salt mix in your treatment of ich. it contains plenty of NaCl. in fact, it's mostly NaCl.

so the bottom line is
Can I add the Marine Salt (Instant Ocean) I already have?
absolutely.

then why don't people just buy table salt in bulk and use it for their SW tanks?

then why don't people just buy table salt in bulk and use it for their SW tanks?
because table salt is 99.99 percent sodium chloride.

the composition of salt water is much more complex and very important to sea life and fish that live in brackish water.

as for killing the ich parasite with sea salt, it has plenty of sodium and chloride to do the job.

Thankyou so much, I have raised him to .001 right now and the temperature is about 84 another two degrees to go? I started raising it last night I will do another degree when I get back from work.

Correct me if I am wrong but brackish water is .002 to around .012. After that it is condsidered marine water.

Am I right or completely off here?

Anyway making the water brackish using marine salt (especially if you have brackish fish) is a great way to help wipe out the ich.

Almost the same way that using a fresh water bath on Marine fish works to rid them of ich. Granted it is more of a change in pressure that does the job there with the Marine fish. But as you raise the salt levels in the freshwater tank to mid to high brackish levels the ich that are attached to the fish will certainly find it a lot more uncomfortable. It won't rid them as fast as it does with marine fish but I would assume that it would speed things up a tad.
