i've been cycling a tank for nearly two weeks now, and the ammonia and nitrite levels are down and everything seems fine. i've been doing daily water changes through the process. a coupld of days ago, i lightly vacuumed the gravel out of curiosity to see how much gunk was in there so far and also to make sure food wasn't collecting (i.e. was i overfeeding? don't think so). ever since then the tank has been very slightly cloudy. not so cloudy that you look at it and think, "gee--that's a cloudy tank." but just enough that you kind of want to rub your eyes and think, "is that water cloudy or is it my eyes?" i know, however, that it's the water, because it used to be crystal clear, and nothing else that i look at looks cloudy! :p

i'm wondering what has caused this, and why isn't it going away? also, i want to avoid using chemicals to clear it up unless someone tells me for sure 100% that it's okay to use something.

it could be a small bacteria bloom. I have never had one before neverless had any cloudiness. This is my idea though, the more chemicals you use the cloudier it gets... I only use Aqua Salt, PRIME water conditioner and 2 spoonfuls of Stress Zyme go on my filter and thats its... Maybe its that, i dunno...

I am cycling a new 55 gallon tank and had my inital bloom, but now I am having a strange clouding as well, but my coulding has also produced a precipitate on my substrate and parts of the glass.
It looks exaclty like the precipitate from using pH down in a high alkalinity situation. I thick whitish gauzy layer forms on the surface as well as the substrate, but it can't be since there was no acid, or buffer introduced into the tank.
I added some charcoal to the filter media to see if that helps, but so far no good (only about 48 hours)

i had the same thing when i used "ph 7.0". i just left my light off for 3days and turned my filter on as high it would go. it went away after 3-4 days
