This is my first post. I have had fish in the past my last set up was a 30 gal with 4 discuses (had them for 2 years) but family health problems forced me to take it down since I could not devote the time to them anymore. 2 weeks ago I rescued a tank of African cichlids from a friend who had a family member pass and no one wanted the tank. For the 6 weeks before it got it there was no maintenance only a weekly feeding. The tank was a mess. I have never had this type of fish before and had to go to the LFS to find out what they were and then do research online. Did I mention this is a 35 gal hex tank with around 45 fish? Sized from small fry to 4" This is a list of what was in the tank-
1 Labidochromis caeruleus Electric Yellow Labido (4")
20 Pseudotropheus estherae Red Zebra Cichlid (1.5 - 3")
1 Melanochromis joanjohnsonae 'Pearl of Likoma' (4.5")
1 That looks like the pearl above but with yellow fins and tail (4.5")
3 Neolamprologus leleupi Lemon Cichlid (3.5")
13 that look like the lemon but are peach color (1.5 - 3")
5 That look like a blue zebra (?) (3") Gray/silver body with light vertical black stripes the 5 babies have darker stripes (.25")
I gave most of them to the LFS and kept the 2 pearls 1 electric yellow 3 lemon 4 red zebra 3 peach(?) and all the blue ones. They are still in the hex tank I have the PH at 7.8 and I change 10 gals daily until I set up my other tank.
My question is, I will be setting up a 50gal tank that someone gave me. It has been sitting in the basement for 2-3 years. I have the tank, stand, hood, light, whisper power filter ( takes 2 pads) a Fulval canister filter ( about 2 feet tall) I have to find my heaters.
Is this enough equipment to run this tank with African cichlids?
What can I use to clean the tank and filters they are in need of a good cleaning.
What is the best and fasted way to establish the 50 gal to make the transfer?
What fish can/should I keep of the ones I have left?
