I inherited a cichlid from my wife's friends. They moved out of town and gave me a lot of stuff including a 75gallon tank. I have 40 gallon breeder setup with a variety of the Red Jewel Cichlid, a Blue Acara, a sailfin pleco, and now this guy for the timebeing.
The jewel and acara seem fond of eachother. The jewel will lay and protect eggs, but nothing will happen because they're not compatible or not male/female.
The Acara and this new fish have been battling each other. At least that's what I think is going on I've seen flaring, lots of chasing, and some liplocking between the acara and newbie.
The Acara's lips are showing the signs again of being a stubborn warrior. Last time it was a smaller convict. He wouldn't leave the convict alone and was wearing his fins out pretty bad. The convict really ripped him one in the lip locking game and damaged his lower lip. Thankfully the convict's mate I found had healed up enough at this point to move the convict out.
The acara is following the same behavior with this new fish. He pesters and chases it all around the tank a lot. It's a little different this time because the new fish is slightly bigger and carries a sleeker more efficient body profile. I think the newbie is quicker and the acara has been so far unsuccessful at wearing down his fins. It looks like he's done some damage to his side though.
The jewel just kinda sits in limbo. It's not partial to either fish and will actually protect the fish being chased by cutting off the assailant. The jewel exhibited this behavior with the convict in the tank as well.
I have no clue what kind of fish this is. Could someone help me id?

Here's the acara and the newcomer getting acquainted.
