View Full Version : Anyone have experience with Barclaya?

Last summer I bought a really stunning dark red Barclaya (similar to this one: http://aquaplants.web1000.com/blongifolia4.jpg - I actually thought it was a Crypt for a while). After the shock of transplanting, it recovered really well and was one of my best growers. I did have a little trouble with small holes in the leaves - I've read that this can be because of too high O2 levels? I don't know, strange, but I couldn't find any other explanation. Then I had to move, and the new water was much higher in KH (around 9-11, whereas it was around 3-4 originally) and I didn't really have time to fiddle with CO2 for about a month. It started with the leaves rotting away. Not turning to mush, but turning black on the ends. It stopped putting out new leaves. I read that they do need a dormant period. It's just sitting there now, with a few very tiny leaves which have been there for months I think. It's been "dormant" for about 7 months or so. I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, or any tips on how to revive it? I'd hate to lose this plant, it's one of my favourites.

Come on guys, no one with a Barclaya? :(
Starry, they often have months of dormancy. Many times you can break the dormant period by simply moving the plant to another location.
And I can't believe I'm even speaking to a Leaf fan.....ugh.:p

I've tried moving it, no luck. Maybe I should show it the Tropica description, then it would have no choice but to resprout :)
GO LEAFS GO!!!!!!! Kicked your *** in overtime, EH! :D

Well if you've moved it I'm out of suggestions. Just give it some more time.
And I noticed you waited til the game was over to write and use such a mean tone. I'm shocked!! But I guess I should expect that from a Leaf fan. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

This is what happens today:
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *uncontrollable, baby-like, puffy-faced, shrill wailing*
(notice I waited till the end of the game again to write that)
Oh Starry......I feel your pain. Only a Flyers fan could know the disappointment of a playoff loss. I don't hold any animosity toward the good people of Toronto.....but knowing that Eric Lindros and his Mommy and Daddy are from there just aggravates me.
Hopefully, you and I can still be friends though.

Friends? Of course friends! Who are the Leafs again? The name sounds familiar :)
PS: The question is, why aren't you a Devils fan? Huh? Huh?
PPS: Barclaya still not showing any good signs :(
The "New Jersey" Devils mostly NY fans. It's up there in never-never land(as in you never never want to go there).
I'm in So. Jersey, just across the river from Philly(yeah!!).
And my question for you is why would you give up so quickly on your team...."who are the leafs". That's not right!!!!
And since this is a fish forum I feel it necessary to say that I really want to try Barclaya and would probably ask you for some tips, but under the circumstances........

PS I'm also looking for some other nice red plants and if you have any suggestions....fire away. Maybe some Alteranthera(sp?)? Any tips would be appreciated.

I would never give up on the Leafs! Can't wait till next year, especially to see Dougie play :) See, I'm a "girl" and what do "girls" know about hockey? So I can stay optimistic and truly believe that they will win, even when everyone else knows they don't have a chance :)
Well, as I said before, I bought the Barclaya with only a few leaves, and I thought it was a crypt. It grew sooooooo well for the first few months, except for a few little holes. Looks stunning in front of needle-y green plants, like Mayaca. When it hit hard water it just blackened and never came back. I saw some live roots a few weeks ago though. I have a horrible, blurry picture of my tank from last summer, I can scan it. You won't be able to see detail, but you'll be able to see how nice and red and big it was. Makes me want to cry :( I haven't been back to the LFS where I got it, and they actually had a really nice plant collection. Maybe they have some, I'll try to get another one.
You know what I really like? I like Eusteralis stellata (apparently it's actually Pogostemon stellata now). I've never seen it live though, but it's gorgeous in photos! I have some Alternanthera and it does so-so. Very nicely coloured though. Rotala macrandra is really nice too, but I've never grown it. I'd like to one day, when I can stop moving around and buy a real tank :)
