View Full Version : Spend my money! 75Gal
Ok, I have a 75gal long tank on the way and was pretty sure I want to do south american cichlids. I currently have a 8" stripped catfish that will be moving into it, and a 13" pl*co too who will be going in there.
Looking for suggestions on filter (thinking Fillstar) and fish. I want more than 4 fish in there so I would like smaller fish (no oscars :) )
Would like a nice variety too. No breeding or anything like that.
Currently, have natural brown gravel to go there.
No limit on $$$
What would you recommend?
Thanks!

Check out www.tangledupincichlids.com (http://www.tangledupincichlids.com) .....;). Tons of fish to choose from, and if money isn't an problem, there are tons of options open.
Personally, in a tank of that size, i would go with some Festivums for your top water cichlids, and have some Geophagus sp. 'red head tapajos' as your lower level cichlids. Convert the gravel to sand, like what you would get from Walmart for a sand box will work. It looks great. I've personally had this combo and the regal look/attitude of the festivums goes superbly with the laid back, gracefullness of the Geos...;). A few flame tetras, and a couple of cories and your set...yay! To be honest though, your possibilities are practically endless...as long as you stay with in certain size limitations...haha.
Humm... Interesting...
Why sand? the gravel i already have is nice little smooth bits of natural gravel. I kinda don't want to have to take that back (I could use in in the next tank setup though...)
I was thinking of putting in a undergravel filter, with powerheads along with the canister filter. I figgured it would help keep the tank 'fresh' any thoughts?
plan on putting in fake plants and rocks too

You wouldn't need a UGF, really they are kinda old school, only a few people use them now. Its all up to you though.
The reason to go with the sand is because Geophagus are known as Eartheaters...they will take in the substrate, and 'filter' it through their gills. Very kewl to observe. Its much better for them to do so with sand, as its easier for them to take mouthfuls and to spit it out. Looks better too. Its really cheap, the fish seem to like it better, and since they are always sifting your sand for you, its easier to keep clean. All the food settles on TOP of the sand, so cleanin is a snap. Its all up to you though! ;)

I haven't tried the sandbox sand, but I do know that pool filter sand works great! :thm:

Pool filter sand has worked well for me.
Humm, still not sold on the sand. I'm invisioning the plastic plants floating around the top all the time. I plan on putting this tank in a wall, so it's
'built in' so I'd like it to be as maintance friendly as possible.
Nice suggestions though......
I'd really like this to be a nice collection of different fish, not just one or two fish. (so they need to stay smaller)....

Use a water-safe silicone adhesive and attach some small pieces of slate to the bottom of your plastic plants. No worries about them floating! :dance2:

Why would you mix the cories with GT, JD, Salvini and cons?
