Ok Im just gunna do a short write up incase anyone wants to try it.

I used a 2' piece of 2" PVC, bought a regular end cap, and then a double over that has a screw cap. So it can be opened up on one end to pull out media. I drilled out a 5/8"whole and Threaded it with a 1/2" Tapp. on the input i used a regular 1/2" to 5x8" barb to allow me to hook up my 5/8"OD 1/2"ID tubing. On the otherside I used a plastic 90degree elbow, also a 1/2" thread barb end.... Sealed it all up with Aquarium sealent. Painted with Hammerred style Krylon fusion.... hooked up my powerhead wich is 235GPH, mashed the PVC with as much filter pad as possible. and turned it on... All good..... here are a few pics

arent you gonna get an ammonia spike from taking off your HOB so soon? i would have waited until you built up some bacteria on your new filter. It might be a good idea to put the ceramic cylinder in one end of the filter so you at least have some decent bio filtration

I have a RUGF, there is tons of bio filteration biult up in the substrate. Its only on a 30g so it doesnt need to be bigger, but for my big tank ill have 4 sections of 4" PVC...... and about 1200GPH

 you have no pre filter, no aeration, and if you crammed it till you could cram no more probably no water flow. just my thoughts.:)

the powerhead has a prefilter on it, and no it has no aeration, just like a normal canister filter.... and even with it stuffed full of filterpad, polyester filter floss, and a huge bag of carbon/zeolite. it flows at a little under 100GPH and this is only a trial run, i plan on upgrading the powerhead to a 700-1200GPH

 mine works great. i run a hang on aslo. the big one for my 300 gallon will be assisted by a magnum. you really should run that set up as bio filter and have some other form of mech filter. if your at 100 gph now what happens when it gets gunked up? you should chek my thread on monsterfishkeepers. lots of good input from everyone. BIGGER BIGGER BIGGER:dance2:

like i said before. this is just a trial run. eventually im going to get a massive pump and completely do away with my RUGF and run just that for filtration.

Don't worry about being the first, I built my first one 30yrs ago and I'm sure I wasn't the first either (got my idea from a commercial/industrial system).
