Would a 15 watt Tropical Sun brand 5500k daylight bulb be any better for plants than the 15 watt "aquarium light" that came with the 10 gal. kit?
or for that matter a 15 watt 8000k?
Thanks

Kinda depends upon what bulb your kit came with. I have one 10g kit that came with a marineland 10000k bulb that did fine with a low light set up. I have since replaced that bulb however with a 7000k t-6 bulb which I like the look of more. The plants are still growing about the same rate. Also keep in mind that the color rating often isn't the color of the light being put out. My guess is that the bulb puts out a peak around the rated color rating and then puts out other spectrums so that the light looks good to us. Plants can utilize a reasonably wide spectrum of light and so full spectrum bulbs are also generally fine to use.

thanks. unfortunately the bulb that came with th 10 gal. was unlabled.
I also dont know the diameter of either bulb, let alone lumen output.. combined with the fact that I just only barely maybe, begin to sort of understand this whole lighting thing...
I have always had good luck with the few types of low light plants i have had in my fish tanks. I just rcd this 10 gal setup and was wonderring if i could maybe get better growth or maybe even try other plants if I used a different spectrum bulb. is that a possibility?

Changing spectrums isn't the way to have more plant variety. Increasing overall lighting is. Actual growth is dependent upon more than just lighting. You have to consider fertilizers also. Even in a low light aquarium proper fertilizers can spur some growth. Also as you increase lighting co2 becomes more and more important to whats going on.

thanks again hound. now i wont be tempted by those lightbulb salesmen at petco.:thm:
