Ok, so I've decided to MAKE a 55 gallon fish tank.. at least attempt it... What I need to know though, is... where to buy those black plastic pieces that go around the tops and bottom of the tanks.. that the hoods sit on... and, how to go about attaching them.. (silicon, glue, ect?) Thanks!
 
it would probably be cheaper to buy a fifty five. i dont think they make those black things
 
Well, spending 200 dollars on just the tank is not cheaper in my case. I can build the tank and stand for under 100 dollars, which I think is a deal. A very nice stand at that. I've made and sold the stands before, for different sized tanks, and people seem to think they're good, and they're cheap, so that's how it's going down... I just don't know what to do if I can't buy those black things anywhere, because then I won't be able to put a hood on my aquarium...
 
I can buy a 55 with the frame at Walmart for $80.
 
Well, that's great, but none of the walmarts in a tri-county area even sell anything bigger than a 20, so that does me no good, and lfs sells 55s, but for 200, 250 for the tank and stand... which is outragous.
 
I know that petland discounts, sells the top piece that you are looking for, for the hoods, but i am not to sure about the bottome piece. Just ask around and if you cant find it then take some measurements and go to a iron welding shop they may have some scraps laying around that they can cut and weld for u.

Nope. The tank and the base are seperate pieces. Most (I wont say all) of the shops, even the small mom and pop ones, that I have been in will sell you just the tank. I have yet to see a 55 for over $100. I am sure they exist but I havent seen one in any of the 15 or so stores I have been in.

Good luck with your search. Oh, and dont forget to check out craigslist.com. Someone close to you may be looking to get rid of a 55 for cheap. There is one in Ravenswood that just went up for $75, including what appears to be a home built stand, hood, etc.
